The Big Apple - New York City

In this edition we will go to the famous Canada / New England Coast & visit some famous cities like New York City, Newport - Rhode Island, Boston - Massachusetts, St. John’s - New Brunswick and Halifax - Nova Scotia.

We will start with the most famous of all - The Big Apple and one of the biggest Metropolitan city in the World New York City (NYC).

New York is one of the world’s largest natural harbor, New York is made up of 5 boroughs:

A leading global city, New York exerts a powerful influence over the worldwide commerce, finance, culture & fashion and entertainment. The city consists of five boroughs and an intricate patchwork of neighborhoods. Some of these include Lower Manhattan and the New York Stock Exchange, Battery Park and South Street Seaport, Chinatown, Trendy SoHo and Greenwich Village, along with Little Italy, the flat Iron District and Gramercy Park. Famous Central Park covers 843 acres of paths, ponds, lakes and green space within the asphalt jungle. Many districts and landmarks have become well-known to outsiders. Nearly 800 languages are spoken in the city and over 35% of its population was born outside the United States. As per Census of 2013 the population of New York City was estimated of over 8.4 Million. The Hudson River is named after English Sea Explorer & Navigator Henry Hudson who entered New York Upper Bay on 11-September-1609.

 The Statue of Liberty is a colossal sculpture on Liberty Island in the middle of New York Harbor. The statue was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi & was gifted to United States from the people of France on 28-Oct-1886. From Ground to Torch it stands tall at 305 feet & 1 Inch (93 Metres) and is the most visited sites in the World. A fact that many people do not know that there are 3 original statue of Liberty’s.
  1. The 1st Statue which was made of Bronze stands at the Jardin du Luxembourg (Garden of Luxembourg) in Paris.
  2. The Biggest stands at Liberty Island (The Original Statue of Liberty).
  3. Another stands at Île aux Cygnes at River Seine, facing west in the direction of its larger sibling in New-York & was placed in 1889.
There have been many other replicas you will find across the globe of the Statue of Liberty.

  • Times Square:

Times Square formerly known Longacre Square is a busy iconic commercial intersection and neon-lit neighborhood in Manhattan has been featured in   numerous movies and TV shows. It is also the site of the annual New Year’s Eve ball drop. Times Square is one of the world’s most visited tourist attractions with over 39 Million visitors annually. Times Square is also the site for the annual New Year’s Eve Ball Drop almost close to 2 Million people crowd the area from 6th Ave to 8th Ave and all the way back to the Broadway

Times Square is a busy intersection of Art & Commerce, where scores of Advertisement - Electric, Neon and illuminated signs vie for viewer attraction.

  • Empire State:
The Empire State Building is an iconic 103 storey skyscraper located in Manhattan, NYC at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. It was the Tallest Building in the World from 1931 until 1970 and stands at a total height of 1,454 feet (443 Meters). The Empire State is one of the most visited outdoor observatories in the World & has been visited by approx. 125 Million People. There are 2 Observation Decks on 86th Floor & 102nd Floor with fees varying for both. The most famous representation for Empire State which most would remember would be from the 1933 Iconic movie King Kong.

  • Brooklyn Bridge:
Brooklyn Bridge is a 131 year old Iconic hybrid cable suspension bridge which connects the boroughs of Manhattan & Brooklyn over the East River. It has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The total length of the Bridge is 1825 Meters & is 25 meters wide.

  • Rockefeller Center:
Rockefeller Center is a complex of 19 commercial building covering the area of 22 acres built in the 1930’s by the Rockefeller Family. It has been as a National Historic Landmark. The Rockefeller Center is a must visit during the Christmas / New Year’s Eve.

  • Wall Street:
Wall Street, an eight block long street running from Broadway to South Street in Lower Manhattan is the financial district of New York & the Finance Hub of United States. Wall Street is the home of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

  • Central Park:
Central Park is an urban park in the borough of Manhattan which stretches over 843 acres and designated as a National Historic Landmark and attracts approx. 38 Million visitors annually. The Park is the home to some of the best Fauna & Flora, over a quarter of all the bird species in United States have been seen in the Central Park. The Park is visited by various migratory species of Birds during the spring & fall migration on the Atlantic Flyway. It’s hub to various activities like Birding, Boating, Ice Skating, Rock Climbing, Cycling & even houses a Zoo known as Central Park Zoo.

  • Yankee Stadium:
New York City is also the home of New York Yankees and is located in South Bronx. The Yankee stadium opened in 1923 & can house 50,000 fans. Legends are connected to this stadium as the Greatest Baseball Player of all time George Herman ‘Babe’ Ruth Jr. also known as The Great Bambino or The Sultan of Swat was a part New York Yankees for 15 years.

New York is also the City in which one biggest terrorist attack was launched & 2 planes the flown directly into The Twin Towers (The World Trade Center) killing over 2,500 people & causing a whooping USD 10 Billion in property & infrastructure damage.
